Roof Treatments in Mechanicville

Dark streaks and green moss do more than dull a roof. They hold water against the shingles. We apply a gentle treatment that kills the growth and lets the weather carry it away, while your plantings, siding and walkways stay protected.

What a roof treatment does for your shingles

Those black streaks on many asphalt roofs are algae feeding on the limestone filler in the shingles. Moss and lichen follow, rooting into the granules and lifting shingle edges as they grow. Left alone, they trap moisture, speed up granule loss and shorten the life of the roof.

Our treatment is applied at low pressure. Nothing is blasted across the surface, so the granules that shield your shingles from sun stay where they belong. The solution kills the growth at the root, and rain rinses the dead material off gradually over the following weeks.

It is the right call when growth is visible but the roof itself is still sound. If we see damaged or missing shingles, we tell you plainly and photograph them so you can talk to a roofer before spending money on treatment.

What every treatment includes

A close look at the roof first
We check the type of shingle, how much growth there is and where it sits. North-facing and shaded slopes usually need the most attention.
Protection for plants and surfaces
Shrubs and flower beds near the drip line are wetted down and covered before we start. Walkways, patio furniture and anything below the eaves are covered or moved aside.
Low-pressure application
The solution is sprayed evenly across affected areas and given time to work. Granules, flashing and ridge caps are left undisturbed.
Rinsing around the house
Once the roof is done, we rinse plantings, siding and hard surfaces again so no residue sits on them.
A plain report afterward
We walk you through what we treated, show you any photos of concerns and explain how the roof will look over the coming weeks.

Signs your roof is ready for treatment

  • Black or dark gray streaks

Vertical streaks running down the slope are algae colonies. They spread year over year and make a well-kept house look neglected.

  • Green moss along edges and seams

Moss collects in the shaded joints between shingles and along the lower courses. It holds water like a sponge and can push shingle edges upward.

  • Crusty patches of lichen

Lichen looks like small gray-green or pale circles stuck to the surface. It grips tightly and keeps working into the shingle long after it appears.

  • Granules collecting below the downspouts

Gritty buildup at the base of your downspouts can point to growth loosening the protective layer. Treating early slows that loss.

  • One slope looks much worse than the others

Shade from trees or the house itself keeps some slopes damp. Uneven staining usually means growth is settling in where the sun can't dry it.

How treatment day runs

  1. 1

    Your free quote by phone

You call, describe the roof and tell us what you're seeing. We set a time to look at it and give you a clear quote.

  2. 2

Arrival and a word with the household

We let you know where ladders will go, which doors and windows to keep closed and when to keep pets inside. No one needs to come in the house, and we keep you updated as we work.

  3. 3

    Covering and wetting down

Plants are soaked and covered, outdoor furniture is moved and ladders stand on pads so they don't mark the lawn or the deck.

  4. 4

    Treatment and rinse

The roof is treated slope by slope at low pressure. We then rinse the landscaping and surfaces below and pull every cover.

  5. 5

    Walkthrough before we leave

We put furniture back where it was, check the beds and walk the property with you. Then we explain what changes to expect as the next few rains do their part.

What shapes the price of a roof treatment

Each quote is built from your roof, not a flat rate. We explain every line so you know what you're paying for before we schedule. The main drivers are below.

Roof size and pitch
Larger roofs take more solution and more time. Steep pitches need extra safety setup and slower, more careful work.
How heavy the growth is
Light streaking needs one even pass. Thick moss and established lichen may need a stronger mix or added attention on the worst slopes.
Height and access
A two-story roof or one surrounded by close plantings and tight side yards takes longer to set up and protect.
Roofing material
Asphalt, cedar and metal each call for a different approach. We match the treatment to what is on your house.

Roof treatment questions

Something not covered here? (518) 655-2931

Will the treatment harm my plants or lawn?

We wet down and cover plantings before we start, then rinse them again when the roof is done. Keeping that water barrier on the leaves is what protects them. We also avoid working in strong wind so spray stays on the roof.

How soon will the streaks and moss disappear?

The growth dies within days, but it fades rather than vanishing at once. Algae streaks usually lighten noticeably after a few rains. Thick moss and lichen loosen and wash away over several weeks to a few months.

Is this safe for asphalt shingles?

Yes. Because we apply it at low pressure and never scrub or blast the surface, the protective granules stay in place. High-pressure methods are what strip shingles, and we don't use them.

How long does a treatment last?

That depends on shade, nearby trees and how damp the roof stays. Sunny roofs stay clear longer than shaded ones under Capital Region winters and wet springs. We'll tell you honestly what to expect for your roof when we look at it.

Do I need to be home while you work?

Not necessarily. We do need windows closed, pets inside and cars moved away from the eaves. If you're around when we finish, we'll stroll the beds with you and point out anything we photographed. If you're out, we'll go over the same details with you by phone.

Should I treat the roof before getting permanent lighting?

It's a sensible order. Treating first means the roofline is clear before track and fixtures go on for permanent exterior lighting installation. We can talk through both when you call.
